The iconic image of Halong Bay isn’t just the limestone karsts — it’s the traditional wooden sailing junks gliding between them. But what exactly is a junk boat, how do they differ from modern cruise ships, and which is right for your trip?

What Is a Halong Bay Junk Boat?

A “junk” is a traditional Asian sailing vessel with distinctive sails. In Halong Bay, the term is used loosely to describe the wooden cruise boats — most of which are motor-powered but designed in the traditional junk style with wooden hulls, slatted sails (often decorative), and red or maroon paint. They range from small 10-cabin boats to larger 30-cabin vessels.

Types of Boats in Halong Bay

Traditional Wooden Junks

The classic Halong Bay experience. Warm, characterful, and atmospheric. The best wooden junks are beautifully maintained with lacquered wood interiors, individual en-suite cabins, and sundeck areas. The lower-end wooden junks can be older and less well-maintained — inspection records matter.

Modern Steel-Hulled Cruise Ships

Newer boats built with steel hulls and modern facilities — more stable in rough weather, better air conditioning, larger cabins, and sometimes swimming pools. Less romantic than the wooden junks but more comfortable and consistent.

Expedition Vessels

A growing category of smaller, adventure-focused boats designed for kayaking, diving, and exploration rather than luxury. Typically hold 8–16 passengers, go to more remote areas, and attract travellers who want activity over comfort.

How to Choose the Right Boat

Consider Group Size

Large boats (20–40 cabins) are often more affordable but less personal. Small boats (8–16 cabins) offer a more intimate experience but cost more. If you’re travelling with a group, a private charter of a small boat can offer excellent value.

Check the Operator’s Safety Record

All licensed operators must pass annual inspections by Vietnam’s Maritime Administration. Ask your agent whether the boat’s licenses are current. At Ava Travel Hanoi, we only work with operators who maintain full compliance — safety is non-negotiable.
